Engaging with communities, facilitating movement and Japanese cultural forms

Upcoming:

Movement + Calligraphy Workshop

Bringing together the traditional art form of Japanese calligraphy with improvised dance, participants in this workshop embody the brushstrokes of a calligraphy piece they create. Derived from Shion’s own choreographic practice integrating calligraphy, the workshop provides a fun, welcoming learning experience that generates community connection, sharing of ancestral knowledge, discussions of cultural traditions and experiences, and taking intentional time to connect the mind and body.

Workshop created and co-facilitated by Kisyuu and Shion Skye Carter (can also be facilitated by Shion alone)

My classes involve both improvisation and choreographed sequences, with an aim to feel vibrant in our bodies. Beginning with a warm-up movement meditation informed by my choreographic practice embodying calligraphy, then flowing through floorwork, center technique, and sequences that contrast between tension, control, fluidity, and release; we’ll discover various qualities and dynamics in our dance.

Suitable for intermediate/advanced to professional dancers.
